Ten routes priced for a 3-bedroom home, the size tables that exist, and two guides that disagree.

Short answer

Moving a 3-bedroom home from Sydney to Melbourne costs $2,500-$5,000 with a dedicated truck and $1,400-$3,000 by backloading, according to True Load. The longest route it prices, Brisbane to Perth, is $5,000-$11,000. Backloading trades time for money: 4-10 days instead of 2-4 days.

The first decision on an interstate move is not which company to call. It is whether your goods travel on a truck of their own or share one with other households. That single choice moves the price further than every extra put together.

How does home size change the price?

True Load publishes every size only on the routes out of Sydney. For the rest it gives a 3-bedroom figure, and this page does not stretch that figure to other sizes.

Why do two guides disagree on Sydney to Melbourne?

Yes Movers and True Load both published Sydney to Melbourne prices in 2026, and they do not match. For a 2-bedroom home, True Load says $1,800-$3,200 on a dedicated truck. Yes Movers says $2,400-$4,200 for a 2-bedroom apartment.

Sydney to Melbourne prices from two guides
Home True Load, dedicated Yes Movers, dedicated True Load, backload Yes Movers, backload
Studio or 1 bed $1,200-$2,200 $1,800-$2,800 $700-$1,400 $850-$1,400
2 bedrooms $1,800-$3,200 $2,400-$4,200 $1,000-$2,000 $1,200-$1,900
3 bedrooms $2,500-$5,000 $4,800-$6,800 $1,400-$3,000 $2,400-$3,600
4 bedrooms $4,000-$7,000 $6,200-$9,500 $2,200-$4,200 $3,200-$4,800

Part of the gap is definition. Yes Movers sizes its bands by cubic metres and separates a small 3-bedroom house from a full one; True Load does not. The rest is two businesses reading the same market differently. What's The Damage gives a wider national band again for a 3-bedroom interstate move: $3,000-$8,000. None of the three is a quote.

When does an interstate move cost more?

Summer. Yes Movers reports Sydney to Melbourne prices 25-35% higher across December and January, which is also when removalists are hardest to book. Stairs are charged at both ends, at $40-$80 per flight.

Do I need transit insurance for an interstate move?

Your removalist's own policy usually covers their truck, not your belongings. The Queensland Government describes transit insurance as cover for transit, packing and unpacking. Prices and what each policy pays for are in the insurance guide.
