Sharing a truck cuts the price of an interstate move. It costs you the delivery date.

Short answer
Backloading means your goods share a truck that is already making the trip, so you pay for part of a load. From
Sydney to Melbourne, True Load puts a 3-bedroom backload at $1,400-$3,000↗ against $2,500-$5,000↗ for a dedicated truck. The trade is time: 4-10 days↗ rather than 2-4 days↗.
How does backloading work?
The same truck, sold two ways.
A removalist running a truck between two cities sells the space that is left. You pay for the room your goods take
up rather than the whole vehicle, and in exchange you give up the timetable. Instead of a set delivery date you get
a window, and the truck leaves when the load makes sense for the operator.

Picture a 2-bedroom apartment in Surry Hills heading to a rental in Richmond. True Load's backloading range is $1,000-$2,000↗ against $1,800-$3,200↗ for a truck of your own. Yes Movers is dearer on both counts, at $1,200-$1,900↗ and $2,400-$4,200↗, but the direction is the same. The shared truck is the cheaper ride on every
published figure we found.
How long does a backload take?
Yes Movers puts Sydney to Melbourne at 4-10 days↗ from pickup to delivery by backloading, against 2-4 days↗ with a dedicated truck. Plan for the gap rather than hoping it closes: a few nights of borrowed furniture, an
air mattress, and the kettle in the car. Prices also rise 25-35% higher↗ in December and January.
What should I ask before booking a backload?
Where your goods wait between pickup and delivery, and whether that storage is covered. NSW describes transit cover
as including packing, moving and any storage↗.
Who insures what. Removalists are not required by law↗ to insure your property, so the answer is
rarely "we do" once you read the policy.
When you pay. Consumer Protection WA's rule for the balance is no final payment halfway through↗.
What happens if delivery runs past the window, in writing, before you accept.
Is backloading the right call for your move?
It suits you when the dates are loose: a rental with an overlap, a house you have already moved into, a share
house move where a friend's couch will do for a week. It does not suit a settlement day with keys changing hands and
three kids needing beds that night. For that, the dedicated truck is what you are paying the difference for.
